Greg making everyone look good

Greg starts by saying that he hears that every athlete are built-in with a special gene and that he was born without ane. Susan tells him that every person in a sports team has an of import role to play just Greg says that his role is to make everyone else look good. Greg doesn't think he could get a professional athlete, and so he says he's retiring.

Greg then writes a flashback about how he used to like sports such as soccer in preschool because you lot're basically free to do annihilation, it was chaos, simply the adults didn't care. Greg said in soccer, even the refs didn't accident the whistles when something goes wrong. The coaches back and then would brand sure everyone scores at least ane signal to make kids feel good nearly themselves. Greg idea he was going to be a professional person athlete. However, things started going downhill in kindergarten when the coaches started to become more strict nearly the rules, the adults were more than serious, and the Snack bar is replaced with healthy food. Greg said he'd stand in the corner of the field and non play soccer instead. In summertime, Greg and his family would picket the Olympics, however he thinks if he was in it; he'd have trouble smiling for the photographic camera. He thinks nearly medals, and if he'd get a bronze he'll effort to sell it.

After summer, there was an a annunciation for Field 24-hour interval in school that happens every iv years and this time if you win the competition, you'll have a school day off. Greg is non in the best shape right now, and then he tries to change it past going to the gym with his male parent, Frank. Greg tries to utilise the equipment, but fails, and gets kicked out of the gym.

Susan says he needs to eat correctly to go into shape, so they go to the supermarket. Greg states he invites Rowley to "tasting parties" because the snacks that Susan buys are atrocious merely the family has to eat them because Susan says they have to articulate the cabinets earlier they go new snacks. Susan explains that some food advertisements are misleading, and says that people such equally Chef Marinara is probably just an role player. Greg tries to explain that it'due south hard to swallow things that aren't wrapped up.

Mrs. Bosh complaining about being on her anxiety all day

Field 24-hour interval is tomorrow, and Mrs. Bosh is pregnant and actually wants a mean solar day off of school, then she wants the team to do well. Mrs. Bosh tries to spy on other teams to work out their tactics. Mrs. Epstein'southward class is ane Mrs. Bosh is worried about, because they accept a lot of athletes, and she also is worried that some adults are going to compete in field day.

Later on Field Day, Greg explains the main events that happened. Greg only signed upward for one event, the three legged race. Greg had to do virtually nothing, considering Madison Burke, his partner, dragged him across the race. Greg had to fill in Marcello'due south function for the l-yard dash, and he got 2nd-to-last place. Greg states that he tin run very fast, but just isn't motivated. Greg discovers that Jesse Range fell, making him 2d-to-concluding. Mr. Ray's team was cheating, they put there h2o balloons in the cafeteria freezer and got defenseless when George Ralston knocked out Mikey Ardalla common cold. The final fifty-fifty was tug-of-state of war and the tiffin ladies won by a solid anchoring past Mrs. Frolley. Afterwards the competition, Vice Principal Roy says Fri is going to be a no-school day for everyone due to classes, like Mr. Ray's, cheating and the cafeteria ladies winning. On Friday, Susan took Greg out on things she wanted to do, (similar a visit to Dr. Kagan'south) however Greg wants to slumber in. Susan states that he needs to be on a real team, not a grade team. She says some of her happiest days were on a team in middle school. Greg wonders how sports got started in the first place, and thinks sports is just a style to settle things without needing a war.

Greg states a flashback that he's only been to one professional person sports game in his lifetime, when Frank took him to the city to watch a football game. Frank didn't desire to spend money to park most the stadium and so they parked a mile away in a muddy lot where Frank pulled out his portable grill. After that, Greg really needed to become to the bathroom which took a while; although the washroom was not good quality. When they got there, it was already a quarter in. Eventually, Greg figures out there'southward a big screen in a higher place the stadium called a Jumbotron. When there was a break on the game, there would be fan cams on random people on the stadium. Greg stated in that location was a "Fan of the Game" which he was interested in, so he started doing stunts which could get you lot on there. Frank didn't similar Greg doing stunts, because it was embarrassing him and then Frank asked Greg if he could get find snacks. However, when going there, Greg heard a cannon shoot which happens when a domicile squad scores, Greg thought he was in actual danger. After a while of him hiding, he went out after making sure the declension was clear, but he couldn't detect his dad. Greg somewhen got escorted to the Kid Finder Station and had been shown on the Jumbotron, which made Greg use his take a chance to get fan of the game, in front of the entire audience. Believe it or not, Greg actually won and got two gratuitous tickets to the side by side match merely he doesn't think going to another game subsequently that so he thinks Frank took Rodrick.

Greg says what stuck with him is how they tried to go far entertaining for the fans and his church should acquire a few things from it like:

Some of Greg's ideas

  • When they introduce the priest they should dim the lights and play some loud music.
  • They could have a mascot to make the service fun for little kids.
  • They could put in a half-fourth dimension show as there's all sorts of crazy stuff you could do for entertainment.
  • The biggest upgrade would be if they added a jumbotron every bit it would assist people at the back feel closer to the action.
    • They could have a random depict to let people who came belatedly sit down at the front.
    • Plus, they could encourage people to be a bit more than generous when they walk by the donation basket.

Greg suggestions arrive to the church, still they haven't got back to Greg nonetheless.

Tryouts

Greg was playing video games and hoping that Susan would forget about him joining sports simply despite him telling her that sports will be replaced past e-sports in the futurity, she pressured him which made him decide which sports that he wanted to play. Greg remembers a time where he threw a balled-up napkin that landed Justin White'southward empty milk glass which the whole cafeteria went crazy over and turned tiffin into a nightmare where kids would try to copy Greg's shot. Greg thought his napkin shot proved he had some talent, so he told Susan maybe he could endeavour out for the basketball game. That got Susan all excited because she played basketball when she was Greg's age, and her team was really good. Merely the real reason why Greg wanted to bring together basketball is because there volition be a lot of kids trying out so some people will get cut out and Susan says that if he gives sports one more endeavour and so she'll terminate bothering him about it. During tryouts, his original plan went out the window when he saw Susan. Tryouts started off with the evaluators handing out the jerseys which had never been washed. The participants were divided into four groups and they started off with dribbling. Greg was struggling with his hand-heart coordination then the evaluators wrote downwards his number. Greg stayed behind i them only all the kids who were bad at basketball copied him. While all of that was happening, Susan and other parents including one of the evaluators were helping their kids out. Then they had switch to their left paw which acquired Greg to express mirth causing his number to be written down. Next upwardly was gratuitous throws and Greg struggled with that because he was used to shooting with balloons. After that they made the bottom 9 kids knuckles information technology out.

BigShot93.png

After school, his parents historic him making it on the team. This made Greg dislocated as he knew for sure that he didn't fabricated information technology but Susan told him that she got the message from one of the coaches, Patel, but this made Greg even more dislocated because Patel is the father of Preet Patel who'south one the best athletes in his grade simply later on at school, Jabari Bruce told him that Preet had to become to his uncle's funeral so he couldn't be at the tryouts so he couldn't exist on a team so his begetter made him his ain squad with Preet and all of the kids who got cut at the tryouts.

Greg then introduces his team:

  • Dhruv Patel (Coach)
  • Preet Patel
  • Jabari Bruce
  • Tommy Chu
  • Darren Woodley
  • Marcus Woodley
  • Edward Mealy
  • Kevin Pomodoro
  • Yusef Meskin
  • Ruddy Bird

Patel meets with his squad for the starting time time in the elementary school and despite all the team members beingness bad, (except for Preet) he gave a oral communication that no matter what the squad will begin to play the right way. Tommy Chu asked him why they were meeting in the elementary school cafetorium instead of the gym to whom Patel responds that the other teams booked the gym for the season so they had to make do with the leftovers. The team started with dribbling drills then passing only because of all the tables, half of the squad had to practice on the phase that was set upwardly for a kindergarten play. While they were practicing, they fabricated a ton of mistakes and when they did, Patel made them run sprints to the other side of the cafetorium merely that everyone more tired which caused them to brand more mistakes then later on a while, everyone except for Preet was running sprints. Later do Susan wanted to hear what Greg did today and he replies that his team sucks.

Greg imagining himself failing at making the big shot in a game.

Greg and then tells Susan that he is worried about existence the one missing the last shot in a basketball game game. Greg and then writes virtually a guy named Anthony Grow who, xx years ago, missed the last shot in a soccer game and lost to the town's biggest rival, Slacksville. He tin can't go anywhere without people harassing him about it. Susan tried to make him feel meliorate by telling him that she was a fill-in point baby-sit on her eye-school basketball team and in the championship the score was tied when the regular signal baby-sit got injure but she got double-teamed and with the clock ticking down, she made her shot which came only brusque. She said that she was glad that it happened as it made her a better person which made Greg even more nervous.

The next entry starts off with Greg on why he should've chose a dissimilar sport than basketball game. The reasons why are:

  1. There are practice three times a week plus one on Sunday and on top of that he has to keep upwardly with his school work
  2. Greg can't get any slumber because his mom went out and brought a basketball hoop only since his school took down the outdoor hoops, teens come in and play basketball all dark and when his dad called the cops, the cops played with the teens.
  3. Practice as well starts at 9:30 pm.

The first night of practice took place at the gym merely Patel forgot to bring his bag of basketballs. While he was gone, the team discovered a bunch of equipment in the Phys Ed closet and so they started having fun and created their own game. However it came to an end when Patel came back with the basketballs. They started practicing free throws only everyone, except for Preet, was struggling fifty-fifty when Patel tried to teach them the right fashion to shoot information technology. Greg got frustrated so he decided to shoot it backwards which went in and his teammates tried to replicate information technology. Patel then told them that they weren't gonna improve if they carried on horsing around. After a few nights of but shooting and dribbling, Patel said that they are gonna scrimmage.

Greg and his teammates were excited that they were gonna play a game for one time but so that's when the Men's League showed up. Patel and one of the guys on the team started to fence virtually the time they booked the gym but so Patel came up with a solution: Play a game against them and whoever won would have the court.

The Men'due south League warmed up for a very long time and then the game started.

The game started upwards with Preet getting the tip-off but then the Men's League came dorsum and started destroying them. One of the reasons was because they didn't terminate saying corny stuff such every bit "Yous attain I teach" and "I'm calling bank" which started getting into Greg and his teammates' head which made them struggle. At that indicate the Men's League figured out that Preet was the only adept player on Greg's squad so whenever he would get the ball the Men's League would be all over him. Preet was frustrated so when he got the ball, he ran to the other side of the court and he decided to dunk it. Just he wasn't tall enough to do information technology so he broke his ankle and the Men's League won.

In the next practice Patel gave a speech about how injuries were role of sport and they were gonna have to stride it up. He tried to teach them techniques to help them score, they started with five on three but nobody could get the ball in so it was now 5 on two then five on ane but they still weren't able to score so it was now five on zero. They somewhen made a shot by luck when Darren passed the ball to Marcus who didn't catch it and it bounced onto Yusef's caput and went in. Towards the end of practice, Patel handed out the team's uniforms which was recycled from tryouts and had a sponsor that was airtight for code violations.

Side by side practise was their first game of the season at the elementary schoolhouse. Patel wrote some new plays on newspaper but none of the people on the team understood what it meant. Then the game started confronting Franklin.

Franklin won the tip-off and fabricated a layup. Whenever Kevin got the ball, he had to have out his retainer and so people would understand him and somewhen Franklin defenseless on so they kept stealing the ball while Greg's team was trying to follow Patel'southward new plays. Patel started subbing kids out of the game and Greg was worried that he was gonna put him in and Susan wasn't helping either. The gym was old which caused bug. At one point Tommy Chu tried to get a rebound but he hit his head at the wall. Someone threw a bad pass and the brawl landed in the urinal in the bath, most the gym and by halftime the score was 38-6 in Franklin's favour. During halftime, Patel gave a speech almost a group of Scottish warriors who were outnumbered by their enemies but they won considering they stuck together and after that speech, the team was ready. Before the second-half started, the team helped themselves to the Woodley'south libation that they used from summer vacation that wasn't clean. The 2nd half started and even though the squad was fired upwards from Patel'due south speech, they still performed terribly. Patel put in Greg and the rest of team in simply things were still the same.

After the game ended Susan said that Patel should've run different plays and that Greg should've gotten more than playing fourth dimension. Frank tried to make Greg feel better by saying that his team would've won if it was golf.

The next mean solar day, Greg talks nearly how sports carve up people. He says that the reason why Plainview hates the surrounding towns is considering they e'er destroy them in sport and the boondocks that they hate the most is Slacksville. A hundred years agone, Plainview was supposed to become their own jewerly manufacturing plant but bigwigs from Slacksville came in and stole the factory which begin the rivalry. A few months ago, the Mayor of Slacksville called the Mayor of Plainview near making a peace offer by donating wood to the bonfire in the park just turns the woods was chemically treated afterward they put down the wood in the centre of the park which Slacksville'southward mayor found to be funny. The wood remained in the park and decayed over time, with raccoons start to alive in it. The reason why Greg brought up Slacksville was because his next game was at Slacksville High.

His team began to warm-up while the Slacksville'southward crowd were constantly booing.

The game starts off with Slacksville striking a iii-pointer, they so stole the ball and made another one and now they were twenty points ahead. Later that they started running a full-courtroom press and they were blocking Greg's squad from passing the ball and everytime in that location was a rebound, the Slacksville centre would steal the ball. During halftime Patel gave another speech how they were representing their town and that they needed to fight hard. Notwithstanding Ruby and Yusef took it literally and started chirapsia upward the Slacksville team (although the Woodley brothers started fighting confronting each other instead). Patel put Greg and Tommy Chu in after Yusef and Cerise got ejected for fighting. Patel told the team to run i of his new plays and information technology worked. The score was at present 52-2 which annoyed Slacksville. All the same the Slacksville passenger vehicle put his starters back in the game and they had already scored 23 points.

Slacksville kept running upward the score and soon they hit 101 points and since the board could only display two digits, information technology looked like Greg'south squad was alee. And so they started going crazy on the bench, and that ticked off Slacksville. The clock was ticking down and the team was playing difficult but despite their best efforts Slacksville made ane more than shot and they lapped Greg's squad, finishing the game with a concluding score of 103-2.

Nov

Subsequently Slacksville, Greg's squad played a few more games just they never won a unmarried one and things got worse and so Mr. Marconi removed the sponsorship from Greg's team. Somewhen, the other teams' coaches felt pitiful for them and so they tried a lot of things to help them win but that all the same didn't change the results and then the rec league dropped downwardly Greg's team level but they still couldn't win. At the last game the squad did the victory bath on Patel, ate at Marconi'south Sub Shop and he handed out awards to every thespian and since no 1 was good this season, he got creative. Patel then gave a speech about him existence proud of the team for trying fifty-fifty though none of them were good. Patel and so said that he'due south done but Susan couldn't let information technology go and showed him a flyer of 2nd Chance Tournament where all the teams that had never won a unmarried game compete against each other but Patel said that he wasn't willing to put the team through anymore misery.

BigShot180.png

A calendar week later, Susan invited Greg'south squad to their house and told anybody that she was gonna be their new coach and that they were gonna be in the 2nd Chance Tournament. She then handed out new uniforms from her own pocket money. Susan's coaching style was a lot different from Patel's. Instead of helping the squad become better at basketball she tried to help them on their team skill. One of the exercises was: You sit in a circle and 1 person passes the brawl to the person correct next to them and that person has to tell something about themselves. When Edward Mealy got the ball he started getting emotional, talking about how his stepmom is strict and doesn't like the turtle he got for his birthday. He took so long that Susan had to grab the ball and pass it to the next person. Later that Susan tried to teach them some drills that her squad used merely none of them got the hang of it.

The side by side day, the Second Risk Tournament took place. Susan rented a big van and told everyone that in that location's a chance that they may be playing for more than one 24-hour interval just everyone overpacked such as Yusef packing 2 loaves of breadstuff and a bunch of supplies for sandwiches and a haversack filled with chocolate-covered raisins. Jabari also brought his video game organisation and a computer monitor and so the team tin can play games in the van merely Susan had to pull into a repair store at one point because the circuit board got overloaded. Finally they arrived at the identify where the tournament would exist taking place, which was an erstwhile prison that is scheduled to exist torn down next year. Susan went to the desk to annals but she had to change the squad's proper name since there was some other team called Huskies. She renamed the team to Winter Dogs.

The first game starts off against the Mathlete All-Stars which was a squad with a bunch of nerds. Just they fabricated up for their lack of basketball skill with their brains. The final score was 37-xxx for the Mathlete All-Stars. After that, Susan told Greg and his teammates that they volition exist playing until they win which made Greg shocked. The next game was against The Brawlers who got thrown out for fighting. It didn't took long for a fight to interruption out after Ruby jumped on 1 of the kids' backs. Because of that none of the team scored much and the final score was 6-5 for The Brawlers. The referees didn't even accident their whistles even once, as they didn't want to get beaten upwards. The next game was confronting Phase Whisperers and they won because they confused Greg'south squad past interim. If they moved anywhere close to them they would flop and act like they got injured, and that resulted in Greg's team having 15 personal fouls in the first quarter, even though they never fifty-fifty touched them. They scored well-nigh all of their points from the gratuitous throw line, and the concluding scored was 33-17 for the Stage Whisperers.

The next round wasn't until the next day so Susan rented the last two rooms in the hotel. Susan rented ane for her and Ruby and i for the residue of the boys. It wasn't a very pleasant feel for Greg as his team was having a Pillow fight and it fabricated Greg want to call security. But he didn't and Greg'due south team started an ice cube fight and hit a sprinkler on the ceiling which triggered the fire alarm and everyone in the hotel had to stay outside for two hours in the freezing common cold while the fire department reset the alarms. Susan was annoyed but she was focused on trying to win a game. Because of the incident all other teams wanted revenge on them and they played difficult. The next team was the only all-girl team in the tournament called the Banshees and they were going all out. In the third quarter Susan had to take Red out of the game and decided to put Greg in, which he did not like at all because of the girls beingness also aggressive, saying that it was similar throwing raw meat to a bunch of wolfs, and that he didn't remember the final score. What he did know was that the Banshees won and they got to go dwelling. After that, a game happened betwixt betwixt the Original Huskies and the Funky Dunkers and Greg mentions that they both looked terrible simply the Funky Dunkers only had v players then they ran out of steam in the cease.

Before the terminal friction match against the Funky Dunkers, Greg realizes that at the end of this round, i team volition go dwelling house equally the worst basketball game team and he sees that his mom is nether a lot of pressure because of it. Earlier the game started, Preet and Mr. Patel walked through the doors. Preet was wearing a boot so he could walk. Susan asked him if he would exist willing to play and he said yes. Susan came up with a new strat that anybody understood which was "get the ball to Preet." The game started off with Greg'southward team winning the tip-off. Yusef passed to Preet who was better on ane leg than everyone on Greg'due south team but Preet couldn't run so the Funky Dunkers would get an easy handbasket every time he would make a shot. Merely earlier halftime, Preet got the ball and a lot of the kids on the Funky Dunkers were trying to stop him from shooting and he accidentally stepped on their betoken baby-sit's foot with his boot and so he couldn't play for the remainder of the game. The head ref said that since the Funky Dunkers didn't have a full team they were gonna accept to forfeit. The other coach didn't have a problem with it but Susan did and said she wanted to win fair and square and so she sent Greg over to the other team. As he walked to the other team, Susan whispered "You're my secret weapon!" to him. Greg was dislocated only he was willing to aid the team win and that included putting on someone else'south compatible. Greg'due south new teammates didn't trust Greg with the brawl so they didn't pass it to him. Afterwards a few minutes Greg simply stood in the corner. Preet would striking some crazy shot and someone on the Funky Dunkers would score at the other end and that went on for a while. And then Preet missed a three-arrow and the brawl came to Greg and all of Greg's quondam teammates were all over him. The clock was ticking down, with the Winter Dogs being 2 points ahead, Greg looked at Susan and she didn't look similar she was rooting for him. That's when Greg realized why Susan sent him to the other squad and that's because he stunk and she knew that he'll blow it for the other team. Just past that point Greg didn't care so he but yeeted the ball and made a backward half-court shot.

BigShotfinal.png

That was enough to put the Funky Dunkers ahead by iii points. The game ended and Greg's new squad won. Greg stated that he finally knew how it felt like to exist the hero and why people were e'er making a big deal about sports. Greg and his new teammates went out to get ice cream and talked about doing this again side by side twelvemonth. Greg says that information technology might be fun just sometimes you just need to quit while yous're ahead.
